I slept in! 11 hours of sleep feels good! I was on the trail by 7:30 and stopped to dry my gear in the sun after what felt like 20 minutes. Apparently I was zoned out for while because it was almost 10am. I took a long break in the sun and then caught up to Mike who had passed while I ate. He was fresh on the trail after a break and seemed to want some company for bit so we hiked together and chatted photography most of the day as he's changing career into photography - as a young tech geek I was able to pass on some info, him being 52 and new to some of the new digital techniques. The slower pace and my efforts to help my feet were paying off - I felt good all 23 miles and was a bit bummed I had to stop when it was getting dark. We took a long break at a great spring mid day with Kickstep and Annie, Buck Thirty (just getting on the PCT after 1000 miles on the AT), Bruiser I think, and someone else too. Had to hang food for the first time. We're in the mountains now!
I went for a nice long hike on Thursday (public holiday here) and I had to try really hard to not look crippled in the office the next day. hahaha. I can certainly feel your pain! I did basically one of your average days, about 30km with quite a bit of elevation change and going over a snowy mountain pass. Sure glad I wasn't packing my house with me- and even more glad that I didn't have to sleep in something light enough to carry with me!
Reading your updates is always a welcome break from studying! I'm done half of my exams now, one more week and 6 exams to go and then I'm FREE till September. I'm excited about hiking in the summer (although it will be less epic than what you're doing), especially about the West Coast trail.
The Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) is a 2,650-mile national scenic trail that runs from Mexico to Canada through California, Oregon and Washington. It passes through six out of seven of North America's ecozones including high and low desert, old-growth forest and arctic-alpine country.
The PCT passes through three states, climbs nearly 60 major mountain passes, descends into 19 major canyons, and ambles past more than 1,000 lakes and tarns. The PCT also traverses 3 national monuments, 7 national parks, 24 national forests, and 33 federally mandated wildernesses.

I started in Agua Dulce (near LA, ~500 trail miles North of Mexico) May 27/09, and am walking north for a few months. Whheeeeeeeee!

ReplyDeleteDon't have too much fun. You're making me feel lame.
Good to hear your body is feeling a bit better.
